Deodorant spray on school bus prompts police search
McKinney police searched a school bus that stopped during its route Wednesday afternoon after two kids sprayed a substance that turned out to be deodorant. The bus came to a stop at approximately 3:30 p.m. at the intersection of Jordan Road and Virginia Parkway and police detained the children on the bus so they could search for the source of the spray, according to McKinney dispatch reports. The driver of the bus was transported approximately 20 students from Dowell Middle School to homes on his route when two of the students sprayed what was later discovered to be some Axe and Tag deodorant spray on the bus causing some of the children to feel ill, according to dispatch reports. The bus pulled into the parking lot of a car wash located on the southeast corner of the intersection and contacted the police department for assistance. The bus remained in the parking lot until officers responded to the scene.Officers pulled the students off the bus one at a time so they could search their bags and the bus for the source of the spray. Some parents arrived on the scene and became upset that police would let their children get off of the bus during the search.“They won’t even let me talk to my daughter,” Dowell Middle School parent Leslie Bean said. “My daughter is trapped on a bus and she ain’t done nothing wrong,” parent Jason Bean said. “It’s Axe and Tag and they’re acting like it’s a drug bust.”Police officers eventually confiscated two cans of deodorant and let children get back on the bus or leave the scene with their parents. None of the children suffered any serious ill effects from the spray and were allowed back on the school bus after police concluded their search.Officers also issued disorderly conduct citations for some of the students for use of vulgar language, McKinney police officials said at the scene. The two students who sprayed the deodorant and caused the bus driver to stop the bus will be interviewed by a school resource officer Thursday and could face additional citations for their actions, McKinney police officials said at the scene. One of the officers said the school bus driver followed the correct procedure for this incident.“Anytime a bus driver has a problem of thinks the kids are in danger, they call us,” the officer said.
